SHYCHLO AND THE BOYS

Heard "The Blueprint" today and though it was the most original song I'd heard for ages. It is either brilliant or terrible, I can't decide, but I like ShyChloe and the boys today. Energetically charming.

Nice.
And an ex-pro cyclist, which is also interesting.

SCHOOL OF SEVEN BELLS

There are a couple of bands that have caught my ear this week, but didn't have the right mix of really great songs and decent artwork for me to feel it worth writing about them (to name names Airiel, The Willowz, The Answering machine, Neko Case, The Love Language and The Constantines).

First amazing band this week then is School of Seven Bells, who I notice on their myspace coincidentally have played with These New Puritans. I just heard them on the radio and scribbled down their name for further investigation. Love them. Am starting to notice about myself that I am more inclined to enjoy a female vocal. I guess in this case the singing is so effortlessly natural as to make it impossible not to enjoy it.

THESE NEW PURITANS

LINK: THESE NEW PURITANS

I must have bookmarked these over a year ago, but just browsing through they stand out as the most original on my list. Every song is a surprising mix of buzzes, rhythms and sharp lyrics. They kind of have a Late of The Pier vibe about them, but without the parody. Their songs sound more serious, more important. Sound a bit like they might terrorise people if making music wasn't keeping them off the streets.

THE PHANTOM BAND

Nearly didn't post this as they only give samples on their myspace, but then I realised that it is ridiculous of me to expect every band to give their tunes away for free. Anyway, "The Howling" is one of the best songs I've heard for a while and so deserves a mention, even if you do have to buy it to hear it in full, or like me just wait to hear it on the radio again.

THE PAINS OF BEING PURE AT HEART

These are right up my street. And what a great name!
Borrows heavily from late 80's indie, my favourite kind of indie I think. Absolutely love the song "Everything With You". This is the kind of revival music I approve of. Fleet Foxes have got it so wrong!

OK, so who cares if I'm late discovering them, heard the song "Nux Vomica" by the Veils today and it really caught my attention. Had to investigate further and listening to their tunes on myspace I am glad I now know who The Veils are. Awesome.
